Care New England eliminates jobs at multiple hospitals

Ayla Ellison -

Providence, R.I.-based Care New England is eliminating jobs at several of its hospitals, with the majority being cut at its flagship Women & Infants Hospital, according to WLNE

Although the hospital group hasn't said how many employees will be affected, officials did say layoffs include both non-clinical and clinical staff, according to the report.

In addition to Women & Infants Hospital, employees at Butler Hospital in Providence, Kent Hospital in Warwick, R.I., and VNA of Care New England, the hospital group's home care and hospice division, will be affected by the layoffs.

The job cuts come a week after Care New England announced it had signed a letter of intent to be acquired by Boston-based Partners HealthCare. However, Care New England said the job cuts are not related to those plans, according to the report.

Care New England has faced financial troubles in recent years. The system's operating loss ballooned from $1.79 million in fiscal year 2015 to $68.28 million in fiscal year 2016.
