New York City-based Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn plans to lay off up to 200 employees, or 3 percent of its workforce, to cut costs, according to Crain's New York Business.
The layoffs will impact about 100 members of 1199SEIU, one of the nation's largest healthcare unions, and members of the New York State Nurses Association.
The affected union positions include phlebotomists, radiology technicians, nurses and clinical staff. Hospital officials said the layoffs would be made in areas that would have the least impact on clinical care.
"Maimonides — like hospitals across the region and country — is working through the reality of our industry's economics: flat or declining government reimbursement rates coupled with rising costs," Maimonides said, according to Crain's. The hospital added that the dismissals will help "produce a fiscally sound budget for 2018."
Currently the medical center employs 6,500 people.
