Brigham and Women's Hospital president to advise NFL on medical issues

Staff -

Elizabeth G. Nabel, MD, president of Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, has been named the NFL's first chief medical adviser, according to the Wall Street Journal.

As the adviser, Dr. Nabel — a prominent cardiologist — will provide strategic advice to the NFL commissioner and other top officials as they work to implement medical and scientific programs that improve player safety and treatment.

The appointment marks the latest NFL move to address concerns regarding the long-term effects of concussions and other football-related injuries.

Dr. Nabel's interest in the NFL role was driven by her love of football and her experience in public health advocacy at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute at the National Institutes of Health, according to the report.
