Boulder Community Health slashes staff by 1%

Kelly Gooch -

Boulder (Colo.) Community Health laid off about 25 employees, or 1 percent of its workforce, according to a Daily Camera report.

In the report, hospital spokesperson Richard Sheehan said half of affected employees were from the Foothills campus. Other affected employees worked in various positions across the organization, including at BCH's Community Medical Center, a freestanding emergency department in Lafayette, Colo.

The ED layoffs stem from the health system's decision to send samples for some routine tests via courier to BCH's main lab at the Foothills Hospital campus, instead of processing them on-site. This operational change affected seven full- and half-time employees, as well as two per diem employees, according to the report.

"All the employees have been encouraged to apply for available positions at the Foothills Hospital Lab doing the same job for the same pay," Mr. Sheehan told Daily Camera.

Overall, hospital officials attributed the layoffs to nonprofit healthcare industry challenges such as rising supply expenses, declining reimbursements and lower patient volume. The health system is not closing any patient care services amid the cutbacks.
