Board chair should resign after pay, job cuts, Vermont hospital staff says

Alyssa Rege -

More than 30 current and former Springfield (Vt.) Hospital staff members signed a petition calling for the hospital board chair's resignation, the VTDigger reports.

The petition accuses board chair George Lamb of not doing enough to help the hospital's troubled financial situation, which has led to salary reductions and the elimination of positions, the report states.

"We have watched with feelings of powerlessness and distress as the financial difficulties facing SMCS have been revealed over the past few months. As employees, we need to be able to have faith in our administration, and we do not have that faith in Mr. Lamb," the petition states, according to the report.

Mr. Lamb has served on the board for roughly eight or nine years, and has served as chair for the past two years. He declined to comment to the VTDigger other than to say the board was doing its best.

The petition was presented during a Feb. 19 board meeting and submitted to Springfield Hospital Interim CEO Mike Halstead.

A recent audit found the hospital lost roughly $14 million in two years, and officials cut 27 positions and reduced employees' salaries across the organization, the report states. Last year, the hospital saw changes to its leadership, with the CEO and CFO abruptly leaving the organization.
