A bipartisan group of senators has unveiled a proposal that would allow states to use Medicaid funds to cover up to 90 consecutive days of substance abuse treatment for patients with diagnosed substance abuse disorders, according to The Hill.
Sens. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, Ben Cardin, D-Md., Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, sponsored the proposal.
"This new legislation represents a thoughtful, bipartisan solution that will expand access to treatment while targeting the cost, and we will push for its inclusion in the final House-Senate opioid package," Mr. Portman said.
The opioid package passed by the House partially repealed restrictions on substance abuse treatment, though the version passed by the senate Sept. 18 did not.
