Question: What is the No. 1 principle you uphold and practice to effectively lead a team?
Ramzey Ibrahim: The number 1 principle I go by is leading by example. Not being afraid to get my hands dirty by getting into the weeds when needed.
Q: As a leader, how do you stay connected to the actual work that is being done – and not just by watching others execute, but by executing yourself? If so, how do you balance between leading and executing personally?
RI: I have strategic meetings with my team around all their projects that are going on. When I see the need to help assist with brainstorming, running rapid improvements events or digging into the data, I take actions accordingly. I still allow my team to drive the project but I add assistance that motivates and empowers them to be successful. I act as another engineer vs their leader when having to execute myself which also keeps my skill sets from getting rusty.
The approach I take around leading and executing personally really comes down to what the customer wants. If the project and timeframe can be handled by my team, I lead and provide guidance. Some projects I would take on as the lead because of the request or the lack of resources I have to provide the completed task in a timely fashion. That includes facilitating meetings, running the data, stakeholder interview, creating presentations, etc. to get the job done.
Q: What is one topic or issue you've been investing time in to better understand as of late?
RI: A lot of my time recently has been understanding what the new transformational innovations are that can help advance healthcare in all areas such as Artificial Intelligence. I am currently working on a project that will trial Robotic Process Automation (RPA).
