Question: What is the No. 1 principle you uphold and practice to effectively lead a team?

Charles Aunger: As a leader, it is incredibly important to practice and uphold amazingly solid ethics. Lead with honesty and transparency, and others will follow. Once you have your ethics established, believe in your team. If we encourage the individuals we work with, the success of the company becomes a shared goal. Lead by example and always remain approachable.

Q: What does healthcare need more of? Less of?

CA: Healthcare needs to be more future-minded. If we spend all of our time troubleshooting today’s issues, we will not move forward. Change takes time, but keeping the bigger picture in mind with all of our innovative efforts will have a big long-term impact down the line. For example, instead of being hyper-focused on privacy, we can shift our focus to security. Be it EHR’s, cloud, mobile or plain digitalization, privacy is a subset of much-needed security. With healthcare identified as a lucrative hacking target, it is critical to educate employees, use multi-factor authentication, eliminate outdated technology, and work towards an interoperable system.

Q: What is one topic or issue you've been investing time in to better understand as of late?

CA: Recently I’ve been investing a lot of time in the security space, which affects everyone in the healthcare ecosystem. Healthcare security is not simply about patient privacy and HIPAA compliance. Security is a factor in everything – records, devices, portals, and transfers. The good news is that we have the tools we need to create a trusted transparent system which makes us healthier.
