Question: What one strategic initiative will demand the most of your time and energy in 2019?
Monica Shah: From an inpatient perspective, enhancing our antibiotic stewardship program will demand most of my time. In addition, expanding pharmacy services in the ambulatory care setting will also be a major focus this year.
Q: Tell us about the last meaningful interaction you had with a patient.
MS: A renal transplant patient was recently admitted to our hospital with an acute infection. The patient was on multiple medications, including immunosuppressants. The patient was so appreciative that I contacted his renal transplant team to verify his medication doses, monitoring plans, and reviewed his medication profile for potential drug interactions. As a pharmacist, it can be challenging but also most rewarding to help take care of such incredible patients.
Q: Can you share some praise with us about people you work with? What does greatness look like to you when it comes to your team?
MS: It is a privilege to collaborate with a supportive and knowledgeable healthcare team that is dedicated to providing patient-centered care to enhance outcomes and safety.
