Question: What initiative are you most excited about today at your healthcare organization? How will it affect the future of healthcare delivery?

Jai Patel: One of the most exciting initiatives we are involved with at Levine Cancer Institute is the ability to better personalize cancer therapies and supportive care. As a large multisite cancer hospital with over 25 locations, we are researching and actively implementing ways to incorporate genomics to improve cancer treatment selection and supportive care therapy management, including those for pain and depression. The next step is identifying mechanisms to integrate genomic and clinical data into the electronic medical record to improve point of care workflow.

Q: What is the most important lesson you've learned about delivering excellent patient experience?

JP: Shared decision making and multidisciplinary treatment are key. As providers, we must educate patients on treatment options and include the voice of the patient in the decision-making process. The answer is never a one size fits all approach and every patient is unique. Specialties and disciplines within the health care team must come together to devise a game plan specific to that patient.

Q: What future health IT capability will have the most significant impact on clinical workflows or patient outcomes?

JP: Big data and clinical decision support. Specifically, the ability to use big data, including genomic and clinical information, at the point of care to make more informed decisions about patient’s treatment. Clinical decision support tools that seamlessly integrate data into the electronic medical record and provide clinical recommendations to providers will help improve the precision with which we select therapies and with improved efficiency.
