Question: What disruptors have your attention?

Dr. Shaden Marzouk: Consumer-based, or patient-based, apps that engage patients in similar ways to consumer entities, but for the purpose of improving adherence and engagement. For all the rhetoric surrounding the consumerization of healthcare, this is a real way this topic is becoming operational.

Another area is telemedicine and remote monitoring. As regulations open, this field is the way we will address supply-demand imbalances in healthcare, as well as improve outcomes and reduce costs. A third area is wearables. As regulations open in this field, we have only begun to tap into the natural way people are bringing ""digital"" into their lives.

Q: How do you define patient engagement?

SM: For patient engagement, knowledge plus willingness equals capability and ensuing results.

Q: As a leader, what is the best investment you made in your own professional development during the past five years?

SM: Living and working outside of the U.S., especially in China. Healthcare is global and it is necessary to work outside of the U.S. to truly understand the scale, opportunities and humanity of this business.
