Question: Who or what are the disruptors that have your attention? Why?

Dr. Shaun Phillips: Retail pharmacies have my full attention. It isn't necessarily the loss of business for prescription volumes, specialty drug sales or provider visits that has me concerned. Rather, it is how they are using purchase information in meaningful ways. They are analyzing customer purchase data for individual marketing as well as analyzing data in aggregate for supply chain and advertising decisions. Once they are able to harness the power of medical record data inside their systems, they are going to be able to predict and motivate patients for care while many of us are still waiting for patients to come to us on their own.

Q: Describe one of your best colleagues. What it is that person does/brings that makes them indispensable to your organization?

SP: The best colleagues are those who inspire others to become better. I have such a colleague that is known to always be ready with the hard questions, who requires that little bit more evidence before giving approvals to the team. The great thing about this colleague is that he is always there to help answer those hard questions and help dig to find that little more evidence with the team. The result is that the whole team then learns together, works together and becomes better together.

Q: What did you notice about your healthcare experience the last time you were at the receiving end as a patient?

SP: I had recent outpatient knee surgery due to sports-related injuries. It was a great experience, as I was fortunate to get everything taken care of quickly and efficiently. The problem is that our support services — home care, rehab, etc, — are not geared towards middle-aged, busy people. We have many of our services and support systems built to support our core demographic — aging populations with older or grown children. We need to consider the needs of families with young children and those patients with limited or no family support in the area. How do we help a single mother continue her own care and care for her kids after an appendectomy? How do we support a family with a dad who just had back surgery and can't do home repairs like before? If either of these folks try to do their usual activities too soon, they will be readmissions too. We as an industry need to consider our after-care, post-acute systems to take care of our traditional populations as well as the kinds of barriers younger patient populations face.
