Question: What disruptors have your attention?

Michael Rosenbaum: Artificial intelligence. Big healthcare delivery systems can be slow to transform and innovate based on the sheer size of their infrastructure, while smaller systems can change and adapt with far more fluidity and speed. But big systems have a huge advantage in the amount of data they amass. They are afforded huge and compelling predictive opportunities with data of that scale, and they can spread the benefit of their learnings over a far larger patient and community environment.

Q: What change in reimbursement is your organization feeling most acutely and how is it affecting your two-to-five-year strategic plan?

MR: Our company has traditionally helped hospitals with retention challenges, predicting which applicants have the highest likelihood of turnover before a hire is made. While this stress remains a considerable one for many of our clients, a handful have also asked us whether our predictive tools could be useful as hospitals shift from fee-for-service to value-based models of reimbursement. In addition to turnover, might Arena predict how likely an applicant is to contribute positively to patient satisfaction, how likely an applicant is to offer clear and concise discharge instructions to patient or even how likely an applicant is to be involved in a medical error. We are carefully examining these types of questions in our business planning.

Q: How is the barrier between competitors and collaborators changing?

MR: In our business, data is the key. Even organizations that were our competitors several years ago now see mutual benefit in sharing data to the benefit of patient outcomes and organizational successes.
