Question: What is going on right now?

Lou Shapiro: We are working very hard to continue to earn our leadership position, one patient at a time, and at scale. We are solidifying our culture under the rubric of ‘leadership by all. This means everyone is a leader, regardless of their role. This applies to all 6000+ members of the HSS family. We are imagining the future, our role in creating it, making the investments necessary to make it a reality.

Q: What is the single most important thing you need to do in your role?

LS: There isn’t one thing, but there are three things. (1) Helping create the vision for the organization. (2) Helping instill the ‘leadership by all’ philosophy. (3) Helping keep our eye on the ball and ensure exquisite execution in all that we do.

Q: There is a lot to improve upon in healthcare. Of the many issues that hold your attention, what is the one you consider exceptionally imperative and urgent?

LS: Contributing to ‘really’ fixing healthcare through the lens and power of HSS. Too much attention on the wrong version of Scale. Scale should not be size. Scale should be Influence and Impact.
