Question: What is the single most important thing you need to do in your role?

Mary Boosalis: Everything we accomplish in healthcare takes a talented, expert, and diverse team to serve our patients and the entire community. Retaining the best physicians, nurses and support staff, along with recruiting new members of the team, is vital to our success.
Assuring that the team is reflective of the diverse population we serve takes a commitment from the board level and throughout the entire organization. At Premier Health, we have placed a focus on diversity for more than twenty years, including a committee of the Board of Trustees overseeing the efforts, and unique approaches such as our Administrative Fellowship program.
In the end, we are here to serve others for their healthcare needs and the role of the CEO is to make sure that the best possible mission-driving team is pulling together to achieve optimum results.

Q: Healthcare leaders today need skills and talents that span beyond those emphasized during formal training and higher education. What is one specific competency that you learned or sharpened in real life?

MB: Not surprisingly, it is difficult to come up with just one answer to this question. Skills and talents such as adapting quickly to change, learning more about new technologies on the horizon, never settling for the status quo, and finding creative solutions to ever-escalating challenges quickly come to mind. All of these might easily make the list of other leaders as well.

However, when all is said and done, some skills we likely learned years ago and may have been put to the side in our fast-paced world, still stand out for me—that is to have an unquenchable curiosity, coupled with a keen ability to listen and learn from others. This applies both professionally and personally and I am convinced that both make for a better, more collaborative, and fulfilling journey.
