Question: What did you notice about your healthcare experience the last time you were at the receiving end as a patient?

Michael Ries, MD: The lack of communication and coordination, especially by the hospitalist approach to inpatient care. Much of this can be facilitated by technology as the optimal process is laid out by the stakeholders of the process.

Q: Please share a new consumer-centric capability your organization has built or tapped into within the past 18 months.

MR: Emergency department boarder coverage of ICU patients and shortening of ED wait times and processing

Q: How do you define patient engagement?

MR: Can be both passive and active. Active includes what the patient wants and needs. Passive is what the patient needs but does not realize it yet (e.g. wellness and prevention tactics).

Q: As a leader, what is the best investment you made in your own professional development in the past five years?

MR: Be open to suggestions and criticisms. Participate in conferences to understand other system's issues and solutions and to understand data to uncover clinical problems that lead to adverse events and additional costs.
