Question: What's one lesson you learned early in your career that has helped you lead in healthcare?

Scott Hayworth: In my 30+-year career I’ve spent equal time as a clinician and as a physician executive, and that dual experience has enabled me to talk with our physicians as one of them. Having the credibility that comes with having been “in the trenches” has been crucial to leading our partnership through the transformation from one campus and 25 doctors in a fee-for-service model to more than 40 locations, 650 providers, and 3,000 employees in the vanguard of value-based care as the largest independent multispecialty group in America. Being a leader starts with being a member of the team.

Q: Where do you go for inspiration and fresh ideas?

SH: Building my network at every opportunity has allowed me to exchange ideas with the best on advisory boards and corporate boards across the country. Working with leaders from diverse backgrounds among community and professional organizations, private-equity firms, and insurers has allowed me to observe trends and find opportunities that have strengthened CareMount in the healthcare marketplace and positioned us to thrive in the rapidly-changing world of value-based care. Knowing that our patients and team members are benefiting from the steady progress our growing practice has made is a powerful inspiration—every day.

Q: What do you see as the most exciting opportunity in healthcare right now?

SH: The biggest opportunity is also the biggest challenge: optimizing the delivery of care to our patients via the collection and analysis of data at both the individual and population levels. That’s why we established our Population Health department several years ago; it’s now integral to our operations as a next-generation Accountable Care Organization and the largest independent multispecialty practice in the country. Our patients benefit from our size and capabilities because their providers have continually updated information in customized dashboards, and we’re able to coordinate care across all departments and locations. Continuing to grow and refine data-gathering and algorithms are key priorities as we move forward.
