Question: What, from your perspective, is the biggest challenge about the future of work for hospitals, and what can they do about it? (i.e. automation, desire for more flexibility, clinician shortages, etc.).

Robert Insoft: With shrinking reimbursement, healthcare providers are doing more with similar or decreasing compensation. This will make it more difficult to attract top talent into this field. We need to remind young talent that improving the health of patients and their community is one of the greatest professional gifts you can be part of.

Q: What's one lesson you learned early in your career that has helped you lead in healthcare?

RI: Listen, listen and listen. The best leaders are those that are not afraid to work with the best talent with diverse viewpoints. Great healthcare leaders have the insight to let those managers manage without daily meddling.

Q: Where do you go for inspiration and fresh ideas?

RI: Surprisingly, I read a lot of sports figure biographies. My favorite is “Francona” the story of how Red Sox Manager Terry Francona brought together a group of hard-working players resulting in world series victory. Lots of great ideas on how to manage a team—a great read.
