Question: What is the biggest evolution you've seen among the hospitals/health systems you work with over the past 2-3 years?

Nader Samii: Health systems have realized that the “old school” delivery model, where the vast majority of procedures were performed on an inpatient basis, must change quickly and dramatically. The successful health systems of the future must be focused on providing the highest quality and lowest cost experience for both patients and payers alike, while also providing convenience, flexibility and financial opportunity for physicians. As a result, we are seeing a rapid decentralization of the health systems with a strong emphasis on moving many procedures, even complex ones such as total joint replacements and spinal fusions, to outpatient settings.

Q: What do innovators/entrepreneurs from outside healthcare need to better understand about hospital and health system leaders?

NS: All healthcare innovators or entrepreneurs need to genuinely understand the true needs of a health system leader, and also need to understand the health system process for decision making and capital allocation. Oftentimes we see the “next big thing” being built for healthcare, but if it misses the mark from a need or pricing standpoint, then it simply won’t succeed in the healthcare environment. Products or services need to be built and marketed to fill the void that exists, and need to be priced in a way that allows the health system to make the investment in such product or service.

Q: What one strategic initiative will demand the most of your time and energy in 2019?

NS: Given that we are an organization that has grown up in the ambulatory surgery center (ASC) world and understand all of the positive characteristics of ASCs as a healthcare delivery vehicle, we will be working closely with health systems to educate them on the value that ASCs can provide to their patients, their physicians, and even their payers. We will advise health systems on many aspects of their ASC strategy, ranging from what types of procedures can effectively be performed in ASCs, managed care contracting strategy and execution, and best practices to maximize their revenue in a compliant fashion.
