Question: What do innovators/entrepreneurs from outside healthcare need to better understand about hospital and health system leaders?

David Zechman: Innovation adaption is sometimes slow and deliberate and rapid and fast in hospital organizations. What innovators and/entrepreneurs would be advised to do is be patient, deliberate, and support an innovative product that brings value and cost savings vs current technology.

Q: Healthcare takes a lot of heat for not innovating quickly. What's your take on this?

DZ: Absolutely agree. In a recent research article authored by Phillip Weintraub and David Zechman, the “Drivers of Innovation” in healthcare should have the following: Creation of a psychological
environment for innovation; Quality of a Leader’s Organizational Relationship; Social Capital; Leadership Clarity; Opportunities to Share Information (Team Reflectivity); An Appropriate Employee Mindset; Organizational Culture; and Leadership For Innovation In Health Care: Drivers Of Health Innovation.

Q: Can you share some praise with us about people you work with? What does greatness look like to you when it comes to your team?

DZ: McLaren Northern Michigan again received CMS 5 star designation, was named as a Top 50 Heart Hospital two consecutive years, and received other numerous quality awards in 2018. The formula is very simple: it takes a team effort dedicated to patient service, quality, and value starting with the board down to the bedside and support services. It is a culture ingrained in all colleagues who serve patients AND each other because it is the RIGHT thing to do.
