Question: What one strategic initiative will demand the most of your time and energy in 2019?

Ajay Sahajpal: Further leveraging our electronic medical records to enhance patient care.

Q: Healthcare takes a lot of heat for not innovating quickly. What's your take on this?

AS: Physicians and nurses along with the more broad caregiver team are always innovating and adapting to complex and unique patient situations. Often these "quick fixes" or innovations are not scaled and marketed for commercial use.

Q: Tell us about the last meaningful interaction you had with a patient.

AS: Due to the nature of my practice in a quaternary setting with transplant and complex cancer patients, I am often humbled by my patient interactions and their individual, unique stories. Most recently, seeing a young father and family man who had an aggressive cancer that we transplanted at his one year anniversary left an impression on me. Perhaps having children of the same age made it hit home more. Seeing him back at work and thriving really was a rewarding thing for me.
