Baystate Health to cut 30 jobs, consolidate inpatient services: 8 things to know

Kelly Gooch -

Springfield, Mass.-based Baystate Health expects to eliminate 25 to 30 full-time jobs as it consolidates inpatient services from Baystate Mary Lane in Ware, Mass., to Baystate Wing Hospital in Palmer, Mass.

Here are eight things to know about the consolidation plans and expected job cuts.

1. Baystate Health wants to integrate Baystate Wing and Baystate Mary Lane into a single-license regional hospital network.

2. The change would allow a consolidation of regional inpatient services to the Baystate Wing campus, and begin a transition of the Baystate Mary Lane campus into a regional outpatient services center.

3. Charles Cavagnaro III, MD, president of Baystate Health's Eastern Region, said in a news release the consolidation would be a more efficient use of limited resources, allows a more effective provision of specialist care in the region and enables the health system to evaluate opportunities for new services at Baystate Mary Lane.

4. Pending regulatory approval from the state, the change would be expected to take place in spring 2016.

5. If the change does receive regulatory approval, Baystate Health will continue to provide outpatient services for the Ware community at Baystate Mary Lane. The region's primary care network would not be affected.

6. Baystate Health has not yet finalized the ultimate job impact. However, officials said this change is expected to affect 25 to 30 full-time positions. According to a Boston Business Journal report, the health system expects the change to affect upwards of 40 people.

7. The job cuts will affect management and front-line employees.

8. Baystate Health officials said they are hopeful many of the affected employees will find positions within our Eastern Region or the Baystate Health system.
