AMA enacts new transgender measures

During its annual meeting, the American Medical Association laid out new policies regarding the rights of transgender individuals in an attempt to educate and inform physicians who may have an incomplete understanding of transgender issues.

The new measures oppose any laws that bar transgender people from gaining equal access to services or facilities. They also encourage the Food and Drug Administration to create gender neutral patient categorization for risk evaluation and mitigation strategies and instead focus classifications on reproductive potential.

“Laws and policies that restrict the use of public facilities based on biological gender can have immediate and lingering physical consequences, as well as severe mental health repercussions,” said Jesse M. Ehrenfeld, MD, MPH, member of the AMA Board of Trustees.
