Alice Solar Mills, MD, pioneering female physician, dies at 92

Alice Solar Mills, MD, a Chicago physician, died Jan. 19 at the age of 92, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

The cause of death was not specified in the report.

Dr. Mills graduated from high school when she was 15 and finished college at age 18. She attended Chicago-based University of Illinois College of Medicine and graduated in 1945. She was one of less than 10 women in the 170-student class.

Before her 1986 retirement, Dr. Mills worked as a physician in various fields, including internal medicine, allergies and immunology. Throughout her career, she practiced at Chicago-based Cook County Hospital and Evanston (Ill.) Hospital.

In addition, she served as president of the Illinois Society of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, and was a founding member of the Institute for Learning in Retirement at Evanston-based Northwestern University.

In her free time, Dr. Mills enjoyed traveling, walking and swimming. She continued to swim in Lake Michigan well into her 80s.
