ACA call center contractor accused of $100M in wage theft

The Communications Workers of America has brought a complaint to the Department of Labor against General Dynamics Information Technology, the contactor that operates ACA call centers, alleging the company has been underpaying its workers, according to The Hill.

The company employs 10,000 workers at its 11 call centers that assist customers attempting to sign up for programs such as the ACA and Medicare. The complaint alleges GDIT underpaid its workers more than $100 million by misclassifying them in a lower pay category that does not correspond to the work they perform.

"These complaints provide further evidence that thousands of workers at a majority of GDIT call centers across the nation are systemically underpaid," CWA President Chris Shelton said in a statement, according to The Hill. "That's why we are calling on the Department of Labor to conduct an enterprisewide investigation at GDIT."

GDIT officials responded by saying the union filing does not represent the company's employees.

"The company takes seriously our obligations under the Fair Labor Standards Act and Service Contract Act," GDIT said in a statement, according to The Hill. "Our call center employees are not represented by the Communications Workers of America. Similar to other federal contractors, the company is subject to routine compliance reviews and as with any notice received it will engage with the relevant parties including our employees and the Department of Labor."
