AAFP Letter Criticizes CMS for Undervaluing Primary Care

The AAFP says CMS is still undervaluing primary care services, despite some steps taken by the agency to reward primary care services in its rule-making process for the 2011 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule, according to an AAFP report.

In a recent letter to CMS administrator Donald Berwick, MD, AAFP board chair Lori Heim, MD, urged the agency to continue its efforts to support primary care. “Millions of Americans will become eligible for Medicare in the near future, and implementation of healthcare reform will provide greater access to healthcare for millions more Americans during the same time frame,” she wrote. She added that PCPs will be essential to make sure the nation’s healthcare needs are met.

Dr. Heim also addressed CPT codes for immunization administration, hospital observation care and maternity care and criticized CMS for disregarding the recommendations of the AMA/RUC by adopting RVUs that were less than the RUC’s recommendation.
