800-Employee Layoff at University of Miami Tied to Lower Payments From Jackson Health

University of Miami plans to lay off up to 800 employees from its medical school, a reduction partially due to reduced payments from partner Jackson Health System, according to a Miami Herald report.

The medical school's funding has taken a hit in the past year, with the loss of about $8 million in state funding and $16 million in payments from Jackson, also based in Miami. UM physicians treat patients at Jackson facilities in addition to the University of Miami Hospital and other UM locations.

The medical school and Jackson are attempting to design a new kind of annual operating agreement in which Jackson would "lease" UM physicians rather than making lump-sum payments to the school, according to the report. That arrangement was slated to be established by June 1, but negotiations have been slow-moving, according to the report.

Jackson recently announced 920 layoffs of its own, as it has lost $419 million over the past three years.

The 800 layoffs at UM will occur by July 31 and account for 8 percent of the medical school's 10,000-person workforce. Physicians, nurses and clinical care providers will not be affected, as most planned layoffs will occur in administration and research departments.
