8 findings on CEOs' social media use

As companies increasingly invest in their online brands and social media presence, most CEOs aren't using personal social media accounts, according to the 2016 Social CEO Report form Domo.

The study evaluated the social media habits of Fortune 500 CEOs across the top six social media channels, including LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Google+ and YouTube. More than 500 CEOs are represented in the data, as some companies, such as Whole Foods and Oracle, have co-CEOs.

Here are eight findings from the report.

  1. Sixty percent of Fortune 500 CEOs have no social media presence at all, compared to 61 percent in 2015.
  1. Of the 75 new Fortune 500 CEOs in 2016, 50 percent have no social medial presence.
  1. There were only 36 Fortune 500 CEOs on Twitter in 2016 down from 50 in 2015. Warren Buffett's tweets were the most retweeted, though he only tweeted nine times at the time the study was conducted. At the time of the study, Apple's Tim Cook had the most Twitter followers: 3.9 million. He has 4.93 Twitter followers as of May 31.
  1. LinkedIn remains the preferred social media channel for Fortune 500 CEOs, with 35 percent using the professional networking site, up 3 percent from 2015. Larry Fink, CEO of BlackRock, has the most LinkedIn followers, followed by JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon.
  1. Use of Facebook has declined in popularity among CEOs, with only 40 (8 percent) Fortune 500 CEOs having Facebook pages in 2016.
  1. There are only 11 Fortune 500 CEOs on Instagram.
  1. Just three Fortune 500 CEOs — Verizon's Lowell McAdam, Alphabet's Larry Page and Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook — have YouTube channels to their names.
  1. Thirty-three Fortune 500 CEOs have Google+ accounts, though "most of them are essentially vacant lots on the information superhighway," according to the report.
