6 Recent Hospital and Health System Layoffs

The following six hospital and health system layoffs and workforce reductions were covered by Becker's Hospital Review in the last two weeks. They are listed below by number of employees and/or positions affected.

1. McLaren Bay Region Hospital to Lay Off Employees, Cut Hours
McLaren Bay Region Hospital in Bay City, Mich., is laying off or cutting the hours of 95 employees. Both clinical and nonclinical positions will be affected.

2. Hutcheson Medical Center to Cut Some Services, Affecting 37 Employees
Fort Oglethorpe, Ga.-based Hutcheson Medical Center will suspend its labor and delivery services Dec. 31, a move that will affect 37 employees. Some of the affected employees will be offered open positions elsewhere in the hospital. Those who do not qualify or do not accept the positions will get severance packages.

3. Raleigh General to Lay Off 14
Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley, W.Va., announced plans to eliminate 14 positions from its workforce and leave empty positions unfilled.

4. Plumas District Hospital Lays Off 4
Plumas District Hospital in Quincy, Calif., laid off four employees the week before Christmas. The hospital also cut the hours of two more employees.

5. Borgess Health Initiates Layoffs
Kalamazoo, Mich.-based Borgess Health issued layoff notices to some employees. Borgess provided no specifics on the number of employees affected by the layoffs, but officials did say the workforce cuts will not result in the elimination of any services.

6. St. Joseph Hospital to Cut Positions
St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, Calif., will lay off an unspecified number of employees as part of a plan to cut up to $30 million from its budget. Employees who will be laid off will be notified in February or March.
