6 latest healthcare layoffs

Becker's Hospital Review reported the following healthcare layoffs so far in February. They are listed below, beginning with the most recent.

1. NYC Health + Hospitals lays off 70 employees
NYC Health + Hospitals cut 70 managerial level, non-clinical positions. The system told Becker's via email the affected positions are "redundant" and "no longer essential."

2. Zenefits to lay off 45% of its workforce
Zenefits, a health insurance and human resources startup based in San Francisco, is laying off 430 employees, or about 45 percent of its workforce, according to the San Francisco Business Journal. A Zenefits spokesperson told the San Francisco Business Journal the layoffs are attributable to several factors, including the company's decision to centralize operations in Arizona and partner with third parties for some of its insurance operations work.

3. Humana to lay off about 500 workers
Louisville, Ky.-based Humana will lay off about 500 workers by April 3, as it scales back its home health division's workforce, according to The Enquirer. Of the Humana At Home workers affected by the job cuts, 88 are in Ohio and the remainder are in Florida.

4. Eastern Connecticut Health Network loses about 20 employees
Los Angeles-based Prospect Medical Holdings, the new for-profit owner of Manchester-based Eastern Connecticut Health Network, laid off about 20 employees at the network, according to a Journal Inquirer report. Facilities affected by the layoffs include Manchester (Conn.) Memorial Hospital and Rockville General Hospital in Vernon, Conn.

5. Rackspace lays off nearly 300 amid shift to private company
Rackspace, a cloud hosting company based in San Antonio, cut 276 jobs, or about 6 percent of its U.S. workforce, according to a San Antonio Business Journal report. Rackspace is also proposing somewhat smaller reductions in its offices in other countries, through consultative processes governed by local laws, said Rackspace CEO Taylor Rhodes in a company blog post on Feb. 7.

6. Schumacher Clinical Partners to lay off 125 as it consolidates operations
Lafayette, La.-based Schumacher Clinical Partners, a physician staffing, consulting and medical billing company, plans to lay off 125 employees at one of its subsidiary's offices in Fort Myers, Fla., according to the News-Press. The address listed on the layoff notice filed with Florida regulators is home to SymMetric Revenue Solutions, which provides healthcare revenue cycle management services. The company is part of Traverse City, Mich.-based ECI Healthcare Partners, which merged with Schumacher last year.
