6 health system executives named to committee to control healthcare costs in Oregon

Emily Rappleye -

Oregon's Democratic Gov. Kate Brown appointed six health system executives to a committee of 18 industry experts tasked with setting annual healthcare spending growth targets and making recommendations to meet that goal and to hold organizations accountable for unreasonable costs.

The Committee for Oregon's Sustainable Health Care Cost Growth Target was modeled after a similar program in Massachusetts that has saved the state $5.5 billion from 2013 to 2016. Oregon is one of the top 10 states in the nation for family budgets spent on out-of-pocket hospital costs, according to a press release from Ms. Brown's office.

Here are the health system executives on the committee:

  • Kathryn Correia, president and CEO, Legacy Health (Portland)
  • Kevin Ewanchyna, MD, vice president and CMO, Samaritan Health Services (Corvallis); president of the Oregon Medical Association
  • K. John McConnell, PhD, director of the Center for Health Systems Effectiveness, Oregon Health & Science University (Portland)
  • William Olson, COO, Providence Health and Services in Oregon (Portland)
  • Jenny Smith, CFO, Kaiser Permanente Northwest (Portland)
  • Jenn Welander, CFO, St. Charles Health System (Bend)

The other committee members are from insurance companies, patient advocacy groups, industry associations, healthcare unions and other stakeholders.
