5 ways leaders can establish values on small teams

Leaders of small teams with high growth potential have the unique opportunity to establish core values that can carry through as an organization grows and thrives, according to the Harvard Business Review.

Here are five things to know.

  1. Develop corporate values with your team. Creating your values alone and sending them to your team from the top down will not give them any sense of ownership. Instead, include your team in the process to tap into the values they already hold.
  1. Collaboratively identify a shortlist of values. After employing a process that gets all ideas on the board, have each employee create a list of their most important values, perhaps assigning a point value to each one and adding up the numbers on everyone's list to find the most agreed-upon values.
  1. Discuss interpretation. People may have different ideas about what the same values entail, so make sure to talk about all possible interpretations of a given value.
  1. Give your team the chance to reflect and contribute thoughtfully. Even by including your team in the initial process, chances are the values statement will need some tweaking, so make sure the process is flexible and dynamic.
  1. Integrate your values. This is perhaps the most difficult step. In the end, it is easy to post your values statement on the wall of your office, but it is harder to maintain a growth mindset and look for ways you can integrate values into hiring practices, onboarding, promotion opportunities and more.
