5 steps for creating effective executive team norms

Executive teams do not always have the natural chemistry necessary to effectively execute projects, but they can institute norms that will help them work in transparent and consistent ways, according to the Harvard Business Review.

Here are the five ways executive teams can cultivate these norms.

1. Identify norms based on past experiences. Think back to past team dynamics that worked well and identify the specific norms that informed those actions.

2. Break the norms down to behaviors. Turn the norms into measurable behaviors, such as encouraging equal participation in meetings, which you can bring to your team.

3. Commit to five norms or fewer. Prioritizing only a few norms will allow your team to really focus their attention on each one.

4. Create a plan. It is important to agree to ways your team will implement these norms on a day-to-day basis.

5. Create a system of mutual accountability. Working these norms into your team's routine will not always be easy but creating an accountability system will ensure each member holds the others in check.
