5 recent healthcare layoffs

The following healthcare layoffs were reported by Becker's Hospital Review so far in December. They are listed below, beginning with the most recent.

1. Depomed slashes workforce by 40%, relocates headquarters following deal
Newark, Calif.-based pharmaceutical company Depomed will cut 40 percent of its workforce and move its headquarters after signing away its sales rights to its best-selling line of pain medications.

2. Avanir Pharmaceuticals cuts 11% of workforce, including sales reps amid probe into marketing practices
Avanir Pharmaceuticals will lay off 73 U.S. employees, or about 11 percent of its workforce, by the end of January as part of a sales restructuring plan, according to the Orange County Business Journal.

3. Kindred to close Missouri hospital, resulting in 115 layoffs
Louisville, Ky.-based Kindred Healthcare will close its long-term, acute-care hospital in Kansas City, Mo. by Jan. 20, resulting in 115 layoffs, according to the Kansas City Business Journal.

4. Detroit Medical Center will slash workforce under Tenet cost-cutting plan
Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare plans to cut 1,300 jobs as part of an enterprisewide cost reduction initiative, and 150 of those job cuts will occur at Detroit Medical Center, three sources briefed on the matter by senior DMC officials told Crain's Detroit Business.

5. Brooklyn medical center to lay off around 200 employees
Brooklyn, N.Y.-based Maimonides Medical Center plans to lay off up to 200 employees, or 3 percent of its workforce, to cut costs, according to Crain's New York Business.
