4 tips from top CEOs

Many leadership qualities driving some of the highest-performing CEOs are learned behaviors that stand the test of time.

Here are four tips from CEOs from Inc.'s America's Best-Led Companies 2021 list:

1. Focus on yourself.

The CEO of Calm told Inc. that he values his own mental health just as much as his team's and takes the time to ensure he looks after his own well-being. Bumble's CEO said that she looks not to perfect one single trait, but instead commits to better many behaviors to better serve her team and the company's mission. Axios' CEO reviews the balance across his various commitments every week in his "Happiness Matrix" to ensure he can be a good leader.

2. Connect with your team.

The CEO of Figs said she looks to inspire the team and encourages the team to "up" her visions to push products to the next level. Authentic communication with teams is also vital, with the CEO of Eventbrite recommending increasing channels of communication between leaders and employees, especially in a crisis.

3. Be vulnerable.

The CEO of Lyra Health said one of the most powerful things a leader can do is be vulnerable with their experiences to help destigmatize mental health in the workplace. Digesting negative feedback also gives leaders a better grasp on their weaknesses and space for improvement, said the CEO of ActiveCampaign.

4. Hire for the person rather than experience.

Hiring employees who have a good sense of humor often makes them easier to work with and signals a sense of modesty, said the CEO of 1stDibs. The CEO of Caulipower also recommends hiring the person, not the resume, and trusting your gut with hiring decisions.
