4 keys for effective leadership development

Leo Vartorella -

Most companies want to develop leadership talent within their organization, but many do not know what steps they can take to do that, according to an op-ed in the Harvard Business Review.

Claudio Fernandez-Araoz, Andrew Roscoe and Kentaro Amaki of the executive search firm Egon Zehnder say there are four steps every organization can take to cultivate a new crop of leaders.

1. Determine the necessary competencies for leadership roles so you know what to look for in potential leaders.

2. Determine the motivation and drive of future leaders. Rate them on these four key leadership tenets: curiosity, engagement, insight and determination.

3. Create a growth map that demonstrates how a person's strengths in the four tenets line up with the responsibilities of leadership roles.

4. Give high-potential employees development opportunities such as job rotations or promotions that fit with their growth map, supported by targeted coaching.
