3M's Chief Clinical Officer Dr. Kayla Pelegrin on the unintended consequences of performance improvements

In this special Speaker Series, Becker's Healthcare caught up with Kayla Pelegrin, MD, chief clinical officer of data informatics at 3M.

Dr. Pelegrin will speak on a panel at Becker's Hospital Review 7th Annual CEO + CFO Roundtable titled, "Key Thoughts on Data and Analytics for Value-Based Care: What Does It Take to Get the Data You Need and Get It to the Right People? What Kind of Investment Is Needed and How Do You Make Improvements?" at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 13. Learn more about the event here.

Question: What is one of the most interesting healthcare industry changes you've observed in recent years?

Dr. Kayla Pelegrin: Making the transition from fee-for-service to value-based care continues to be a challenge despite the desire to deliver low-cost, quality care. The transition has been effectively underway since the 90s starting with HMOs but has struggled to make the transition while living in a system truly designed for fee-for-service. Regardless of your opinion on the effectiveness of ACA, it has compelled payer and provider organizations alike to have a productive dialogue about closer alignment.

Q: What major challenges, financial or otherwise, are affecting hospitals in the markets you serve?

KP: Performance and operations improvements in one area often create the unintended consequence of either pushing the problem downstream or creating a new problem in other areas. We need a solution that not only can identify problematic areas but also how they affect and corollate to other issues.
