If leaders do not take the time to identify the biggest challenges facing their organization, they will never be able solve them.
Mukesh Gangwal, president and CEO of Prism Healthcare Partners; David Nosacka, division CFO for Springfield, Ill.-based Hospital Sisters Health System; and Susan Turney, MD, CEO of Marshfield (Wis.) Clinic Health System, gathered to discuss healthcare's most pressing challenges during Becker's Hospital Review's 6th Annual CEO + CFO Roundtable, which took place from Nov. 13 to Nov. 15.
Here are three thoughts on the biggest hurdles providers must overcome.
1. "The one thing I truly worry about is the lack of concern and empathy by legislators for the people we serve. That worries me a lot," Dr. Turney said.
2. "There is a general recognition in the healthcare industry things are going to get worse. No one in this room expects reimbursement to increase or more coverage for self-pay patients," Mr. Gangwal said. "What we are seeing is selective offense as being the best form of defense."
3. "One question I always ask is, 'Is everyone at their right altitude?' Is the CEO focused on size, scale and essentiality?" Mr. Nosacka said. "If he's having to pull back and run the operating team or pull back and focus on an emergency room contract, that's not where I want my CEO or division president. I want him out trying to build a clinically integrated network."
