21 healthcare layoffs so far in 2017

The following healthcare layoffs were reported by Becker's Hospital Review so far in 2017. They are listed below, beginning with the most recent.

1. Alabama hospital lays off 26 workers
Highlands Medical Center in Scottsboro, Ala., laid off 26 employees.

2. Banner Health issues another round of layoffs as it restructures operations
Phoenix-based Banner Health is laying off more employees, including its top public relations executive, as it restructures operations.

3. Partners' hospitals to lay off employees as part of cost-cutting plan
North Shore Medical Center in Salem, Mass., which includes two campuses and is part of Boston-based Partners HealthCare, plans to lay off employees to help overcome financial losses.

4. Humana to cut unspecified number of jobs, top positions in Kentucky, Wisconsin
Louisville, Ky.-based Humana will lay off an undisclosed number of employees in Kentucky and Wisconsin as part of the insurer's growth strategy following its unsuccessful bid to merge with Aetna.

5. MDwise to lay off 79 employees in departure from Indiana Medicaid program
Indianapolis-based insurer MDwise will exit Indiana's Medicaid program at the end of March, affecting 79 workers.

6. Via Christi Health revises number of layoffs
Wichita, Kan.-based Via Christi Health said in February it is laying off employees as it transitions parts of its billing cycle to national vendor R1 RCM. Billing employees affected by the layoffs are in Wichita, Manhattan and Pittsburg, Kan.

7. Hennepin County Medical Center to cut 131 full-time jobs
Minneapolis-based Hennepin County Medical Center in February announced plans to cut the equivalent of 131 full-time jobs through layoffs.

8. UnitedHealth Group to lay off 119 Optum employees
Minnetonka, Minn.-based UnitedHealth Group said it will lay off 119 workers at its Optum offices in Centennial, Colo. The job cuts take effect April 16.

9. TriHealth lays off 69 employees
Cincinnati-based TriHealth is restructuring its operations. As part of the process, 69 human resources, IT, finance and corporate administration positions have been cut.

10. NYC Health + Hospitals lays off 70 employees
NYC Health + Hospitals cut 70 managerial level, non-clinical positions. The system told Becker's via email the affected positions are "redundant" and "no longer essential."

11. Zenefits to lay off 45% of its workforce
Zenefits, a health insurance and human resources startup based in San Francisco, announced in February plans to lay off 430 employees, or about 45 percent of its workforce.

12. Humana to lay off about 500 workers
Louisville, Ky.-based Humana will lay off about 500 workers by April 3, as it scales back its home health division's workforce.

13. Eastern Connecticut Health Network loses about 20 employees
Los Angeles-based Prospect Medical Holdings, the new for-profit owner of Manchester-based Eastern Connecticut Health Network, laid off about 20 employees at the network. Facilities affected by the layoffs include Manchester (Conn.) Memorial Hospital and Rockville General Hospital in Vernon, Conn.

14. Rackspace lays off nearly 300 amid shift to private company
Rackspace, a cloud hosting company based in San Antonio, cut 276 jobs, or about 6 percent of its U.S. workforce.

15. Schumacher Clinical Partners to lay off 125 as it consolidates operations
Lafayette, La.-based Schumacher Clinical Partners, a physician staffing, consulting and medical billing company, plans to lay off 125 employees at one of its subsidiary's offices in Fort Myers, Fla.

16. Texas hospital shutters sexual assault forensic unit as part of layoffs
Mission (Texas) Regional Medical Center closed its sexual assault forensic unit, or SAFE Place. The closure was part of 40 layoffs that took place at the hospital, according to Javier Iruegas, CEO of MRMC.

17. Long Beach hospitals lay off 130 employees amid financial challenges
Long Beach (Calif.) Memorial and its two sister hospitals in Long Beach laid off 130 employees, or less than 3 percent of staffing, according to a hospital statement.

18. Memorial Hermann to cut workforce by 112
Houston-based Memorial Hermann Health System in January announced plans to lay off 112 employees, or less than 1 percent of its 25,000-employee workforce.

19. Theranos lays off 40% of workforce
Palo Alto, Calif.-based blood testing startup Theranos laid off 155 employees

20. CHI St. Alexius cuts workforce by 2.7% amid rising costs
CHI St. Alexius Health in Bismarck, N.D., laid off 52 employees, or 2.7 percent of its total workforce.

21. MD Anderson to cut about 1,000 jobs
The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston in January announced plans to eliminate about 1,000 jobs, or 5 percent of its 20,000-person workforce, as it tries to improve its financial health.
