15 Recent Hospital and Health System Layoffs

The following hospital and/or health system job eliminations were announced or implemented within the past month. They are listed by the number of employees or positions affected.  

1. Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center to Cut 950 Jobs
Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., announced the elimination of 950 full-time positions, which accounts for 7 percent of the hospital's workforce.

2. Orlando Health to Cut 400 Jobs
Orlando (Fla.) Health is cutting up to 400 jobs immediately, which represents a 2 percent to 3 percent workforce reduction for the system.

3. Memorial Medical Center in California to Shuffle, Cut Jobs for 165 Employees
Memorial Medical Center in Modesto, Calif., is implementing a workforce reduction that will affect 165 employees.

4. Meriter Health in Wisconsin to Eliminate 140 Jobs
Madison, Wis.-based Meriter Health Services is cutting a total of 140 jobs, 50 of which involve employee layoffs.

5. LSU's Bogalusa Medical Center Trims 87 Jobs
Bogalusa (La.) Medical Center, part of Baton Rouge-based Louisiana State University Health, is laying off 45 employees and trimming another 42 vacant positions.

6. Kaiser Permanente Lays Off 84 Employees in Southern California
Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente laid off 84 employees from its Southern California region.

7. Crouse Hospital to Cut 70 Jobs in Second Round of Layoffs
Crouse Hospital in Syracuse, N.Y., announced the elimination of 70 jobs in early November, two weeks after cutting 25 jobs.

8. St. Vincent Health System in Arkansas Cuts 50 Jobs
St. Vincent Health System in Little Rock, Ark., laid off 29 employees and eliminated another 21 open positions.

9. Adventist Health in California Trims 48 Jobs
Roseville, Calif.-based Adventist Health's Northern California Network laid off 48 employees this year from St. Helena Hospital.

10. Nebraska Medical Center to Lay Off 38 Employees

Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha is planning to lay off 38 employees by the end of the year and not fill 100 positions that are currently open.

11. Glens Falls Hospital in New York Lays Off 29 Employees
Glens Falls (N.Y.) Hospital is laying off 29 employees and reducing work hours for another five positions.

12. St. Mary's of Michigan Medical Center to Cut 24 Jobs
St. Mary's of Michigan Medical Center in Saginaw is cutting 24 jobs and reducing work hours for another 46 employees.

13. Landmark Medical Center Lays Off 53 Employees
Landmark Medical Center in Woonsocket, R.I., laid off 31 people, in early November, including staff involved in management, administration and patient care. Later in the month, the hospital laid off another 22 employees, citing a recent decline in patient volume.

14. Lawrence & Memorial Hospital Lays Off 22 Employees
Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London, Conn., laid off 14 full-time and eight part-time employees.

15. Emanuel Medical Center in California Cuts 24 Jobs
The 209-bed Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock, Calif., laid off 24 employees.
