11 healthcare layoffs reported in August

The following healthcare layoffs were reported by Becker's Hospital Review in August. The list below begins with the most recent.

1. Intermountain cuts 396 jobs, adds 107 in reorganization
Salt Lake City-based Intermountain Healthcare said it eliminated 396 positions in the reorganization that began late last year, but it has added 107 new ones.

2. Texas hospital lays off 40% of administrative staff amid financial troubles
Huntsville (Texas) Memorial Hospital is facing financial troubles, but the hospital is taking steps toward improvement, including a 40 percent reduction in administrative staff.

3. ProMedica lays off 100 employees
Toledo, Ohio-based ProMedica laid off about 100 employees last month, which primarily affected "leadership roles and corporate functions."

4. Steward Ohio hospital boosts  layoffs to 468 as closure looms
Dallas-based Steward Health Care issued a revised notice Aug. 17 indicating job losses from the pending closure of Youngstown-based Northside Regional Medical Center will affect 468 employees, rather than the 388 previously reported.

5. Roche's Genentech to cut 223 jobs in California
Genentech, a subsidiary of Swiss pharma giant Roche, is cutting 223 jobs at its California headquarters.

6. Pennsylvania hospital lays off 45 physician practice employees
St. Christopher's Hospital for Children in Philadelphia laid off about 45 employees and eliminated certain unfilled positions in its general pediatric practice, specialty and satellite physician offices.

7. Colorado hospital lays off 40
Southwest Memorial Hospital in Cortez, Colo., laid off 40 employees Aug. 14 amid financial struggles partially attributed to overstaffing.

8. Tennova Healthcare lays off staff at 3 Tennessee hospitals
Knoxville, Tenn.-based Tennova Healthcare laid off less than 1 percent of staff at its three Knoxville area hospitals.

9. Shriners Hospitals for Children cuts 10% of staff at Washington facility
Shriners Hospitals for Children in Spokane, Wash., is reducing its workforce by about 10 percent as it transitions to an outpatient-focused microhospital.

10. Northwestern lays off 60 IT workers after Epic EHR rollout
Chicago-based Northwestern Medicine is laying off 60 IT staffers after launching a health records system in March.

11. Arizona hospital emerges from bankruptcy, lays off 60
Santa Cruz Valley Regional Hospital in Green Valley, Ariz., previously Green Valley (Ariz.) Hospital, laid off 60 employees July 31 after emerging from bankruptcy.
