10 things to know about Pender Community Hospital

Pender (Neb.) Community Hospital is a 21-bed critical access hospital, according to American Hospital Directory.

Here are 10 things to know:

1. Melissa Kelly serves as PCH's CEO. She was previously the hospital's CFO for eight years and was instrumental in helping PCH secure the finances needed to build a $20.5 million facility that opened in 2012, according to The Pender Times.

2. Mike Minert serves as chairman of the hospital's five-person board of directors. Board members are elected by registered voters in the hospital district.

3. In July, CMS recognized PCH as a five-star rated facility. Hospitals are scored on quality measures including safety, readmissions, timeliness of care and patient satisfaction.

4. PCH was chosen to be supported by the Small Rural Hospital Transition Project in December 2017. The Health Resources and Services Administration's Federal Office of Rural Health Policy is funding the project through a contract to Rural Health Innovations.

5. In recent years, PCH acquired the Pender, Emerson, Bancroft and Beemer clinics. The Apothecary Shop and Wisner Apothecary joined Pender Care Centre District.

6. In 2017, Studer Group recognized PCH for demonstrating outstanding performance in emergency department patient care and excellence in outpatient services. The organization also honored PCH for excellence in emergency department patient care in 2016 and 2015.

7. The National Rural Health Association named PCH a Top 20 Critical Access Hospital in 2015.

8. The Pender Community Hospital Association was established in 1952 to build a new hospital in the area. The association began construction on PCH in 1954 for $320,990.

9. The Pender Community Health Care Foundation was created in 1991 to encourage charitable donations to the hospital. In 1996 and 1997, the foundation raised more than $1.1 million to fund the construction of an outpatient specialty clinic.

10. In 2017, The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust's Rural Healthcare Program awarded PCH $400,000 for a new 64-slice computed tomography scanner.
