10 things to know about Dr. David Nash, founding dean of Jefferson College of Population Health

David B. Nash, MD, who boasts nearly 30 years on the faculty at Philadelphia-based Thomas Jefferson University, was named founding dean of the Jefferson College of Population Health in 2008.

Here are 10 things to know about Dr. Nash and his work:

1. Dr. Nash is a board-certified internist and diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine. He drew on his clinical experience and expertise when developing the Jefferson College of Population Health, where he remains the dean. He also serves as the college's Dr. Raymond C. and Doris N. Grandon Professor of Health Policy.

2. At JCPH, Dr. Nash aims to develop healthcare leaders of the future. The college offers masters programs in public health, healthcare quality and safety, health policy, applied health economics and population health as well as a doctoral program in population health sciences.

3. Throughout his nearly three-decade long career, Dr. Nash has been recognized for work in public accountability for outcomes, physician leadership development and quality of care improvement. He counts health policy, population health, quality and safety, outcomes management, and healthcare reform among his research and clinical interests.

4. Dr. Nash has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and edited 23 books, including Demand Better! Revive Our Broken Healthcare System and Population Health: Creating a Culture of Wellness.

5. He serves as editor-in-chief of journals including the American Journal of Medical Quality and Population Health Management. In the 1980s, he was named the inaugural deputy editor of Annals of Internal Medicine.

6. Beyond his leadership at Jefferson, Dr. Nash lends his expertise to national boards and organizations. He is a principal faculty member for quality of care programming for the American Association for Physician Leadership and serves on the National Quality Forum's Task Force on Improving Population Health.

7. Humana appointed Dr. Nash to its board in 2009 and he recently concluded his term serving on the board of Bryn Mawr, Pa.-based Main Line Health in 2017. He now serves on the board of the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine as well as the National Investment Center for Senior Housing and Care board.

8. Dr. Nash has chaired the Technical Advisory Group of the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council for roughly 20 years, leading the group in its efforts to respond to issues related to research methodology, statistical expertise and risk-adjustment methods.

9. In 2006, NAHDO honored Dr. Nash with the Elliot Stone Award for leadership in public accountability for health data and three years later he earned the Wharton Healthcare Alumni Achievement Award. Wharton also bestowed the Impact Award on Dr. Nash in 2012 and he was honored for innovation in medical education by the Philadelphia Business Journal in 2012.

10. Dr. Nash earned a medical degree from the University of Rochester (N.Y.) School of Medicine and Dentistry and completed residency training at the Graduate Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
