10 healthcare layoffs in July

The following healthcare layoffs were reported by Becker's Hospital Review in July. They are listed below, beginning with the most recent.

1. Kindred to close Ohio hospital, lay off 111 employees
Louisville, Ky.-based Kindred Healthcare will close Marshfield-based Kindred Hospital Central Ohio by the end of September, resulting in 111 layoffs.

2. Molina initiates first round of layoffs
Long Beach, Calif.-based Molina Healthcare began its first round of layoffs. The payer plans to cut 54 positions in California by Oct. 1.

3. Mayo Clinic confirms 3 job cuts in Albert Lea amid consolidation plans
Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic is beginning staff restructuring as part of plans to consolidate services between its hospitals in Albert Lea and Austin, Minn.

4. University of Missouri shutters $10M medical research institute to save costs
Columbia-based University of Missouri closed its $10 million International Institute of Nano and Molecular Medicine, reportedly affecting 17 full-time and part-time employees through both layoffs and contract nonrenewals.

5. Detroit Medical Center eliminates 22 positions
Detroit Medical Center eliminated 22 full-time, part-time and contingent positions, including 14 nurse practitioners and physician assistants and an additional eight open positions.

6. Illinois hospital lays off 21 employees
HSHS St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Belleville, Ill., laid off 21 employees, or less than 2 percent of its total workforce.

7. Cook County to lay off 1,100 workers, including hospital employees
Cook County is laying off 1,100 workers, including hospital employees, after an Illinois appeals court refused to overturn a temporary restraining order blocking the county from implementing a sweetened beverage tax.

8. LifePoint hospital lays off 55 employees
Columbus, Ga.-based St. Francis Hospital, operated by Brentwood, Tenn.-based LifePoint Health, is laying off 55 employees.

9. Providence Health & Services plans layoffs to cut costs
Renton, Wash.-based Providence Health & Services will implement a cost-cutting plan that involves layoffs.

10. North Carolina hospital to close and lay off 76 employees, including nurses
Select Specialty Hospital-Winston-Salem (N.C.) closes Sept. 1, resulting in 76 layoffs.
