University of Pittsburgh Medical Center announced it has been chosen by Nazarbayev University in Kazakhstan to conduct a feasibility study on the development of a national oncology treatment and research center in that country.
The Kazakhstani government is planning to build a National Research Cancer Center in Astana, the country's capital, and chose Nazarbayev University in Astana to manage the center. The project will include a 300- to 400-bed hospital, outpatient care, a research facility and a hotel complex. The facility will be modeled on UPMC CancerCenter's integration of care, research and medical education.
Through a consultative agreement between UPMC and Nazarbayev University, UPMC will determine the type of oncology services needed in Kazakhstan and the feasibility of developing a national cancer center, according to the release.
UPMC's partnership with Nazarbayev University is part of the health system's overall strategy of sharing scientific expertise and innovation globally to improve patient care, according to the release.
The financial terms of UPMC's agreement with Nazarbayev University were not disclosed.
