Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center in Boston announced plans to create a personalized cancer care center and consortium using a $2.5 million gift.
The hospital received a $2.5 million pledge from the Newman-Lakka Cancer Foundation to establish the Newman-Lakka Institute for Personalized Cancer Care, which will create a centralized database to track and analyze the outcomes of new cancer therapies targeting rare and difficult-to-treat tumors, according to the release.
The database will focus on drugs designed for specific molecular pathways, which may potentially cause fewer side effects. Physicians at the institute will determine what combinations of these drugs are most appropriate for different cancers and patients and will use outcomes data to help expand access to these drugs.
The Newman-Lakka Institute is establishing an international consortium of hospitals to help collect, analyze and share data on personalized cancer therapies. The consortium currently includes MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston; New York University Langone Medical Center in New York City; the University of Texas in Austin; Miami Children's Hospital; Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.; St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.; University of Minnesota Medical Center in Minneapolis; and University of Heidelberg in Germany.
