Medical College of Georgia Health May Face Layoffs

Medical College of Georgia Health in Augusta, Ga., may consider layoffs as a way to balance its budget in the wake of an anticipated $14 million drop in funding, according to an Augusta Chronicle report.

The drop in funding is driven in part by decreased state funding as well as decreasing revenues and increasing expenses, said Ricardo Azziz, MD, chairman of the board that oversee MCGHeath.

Dr. Azziz said labor expenses will be examined, which could result in layoffs, but added, "We also understand our responsibility to the community to make sure that it is minimized to the extent possible," according to the report.
