Weems Memorial Hospital CEO H.D. Cannington to resign

Anuja Vaidya -

H.D. Cannington, CEO of Weems Memorial Hospital in Apalachicola, Fla., plans to resign in 30 days, according to an Apalachicola Times report.

Mr. Cannington took over as leader of the hospital in 2018, after Franklin County commissioners unanimously voted to replace CEO Mike Cooper.

Mr. Cannington's Aug. 7 resignation announcement came less than a day after county commissioners rejected his proposal to hire a family physician to oversee the hospital's clinics, according to the Times. The plan was rejected after commissioners raised objections to the salary and benefits proposed for the physician.

Mr. Cannington defended his salary and benefit recommendation, saying that the hospital's revenue would increase due to the surgery volume the new physician would draw and that his practicing at Weems Memorial would be a benefit for the community, the Times reported.

Mr. Cannington has said he will assist in the transition of leadership.
