Vanderbilt University Medical Center names 1st VP of health equity: 4 takeaways

Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt University Medical Center appointed Consuelo Wilkins, MD, its inaugural vice president for health equity.

Here are four takeaways:

1. Dr. Wilkins will also serve as associate dean for health equity with the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, also a newly created role.

2. She is currently executive director of the Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance, which develops and supports collaborative initiatives between Nashville-based Meharry Medical College and VUMC as well as community projects. The alliance will continue to report to her after she has assumed her new roles.

3. She is also principal investigator or co-investigator for numerous federally funded research initiatives at VUMC, including the Vanderbilt-Miami-Meharry Center of Excellence in Precision Medicine and Population Health.

4. Dr. Wilkins has previous experience as an associate professor of medicine in geriatrics and nutritional science, psychiatry and surgery at St. Louis-based Washington University School of Medicine.
