University of Florida Health appoints Dr. David Nelson president: 5 things to know

Gainesville-based University of Florida named David R. Nelson, MD, senior vice president for health affairs at the university and president of University of Florida Health, effective April 30.

UF Health includes six health science colleges, nine research centers, two hospitals and more than 100 physician practices on campuses in Gainesville and Jacksonville.

Five things to know:

1. Dr. Nelson has served as interim president for nearly a year.

2. He is a professor of medicine, assistant vice president for research and director of the university's Clinical and Translational Science Institute.

3. He has worked at UF Health for 26 years.

4. Dr. Nelson is a liver disease expert with 200-plus published articles to his name, and he has represented the United States on the World Health Organization hepatitis C virus guidelines committee.

5. In 2018, he received the FDA's Regulatory Science Excellence Award.
